Buprenorphine binds to opioid receptors in the brain and reduces cravings without causing the same level of intoxication as other opioids. Naloxone blocks the effects of opioids. Together, these two drugs work to reduce the symptoms of withdrawal and help people addicted to opioids abstain from drug use.

Decreased risk of relapse

Reduced risk of overdose

Improved overall health

What Is Suboxone?

Suboxone is a prescription medication used to treat opioid addiction. The medication combines buprenorphine and naloxone which work together to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings. When taken as prescribed, Suboxone is a safe and effective way to detox from opioids and to stay in treatment.

How Does Suboxone Work?

Suboxone works by binding opioid receptors in the brain, but to a lesser degree than heroin or oxycodone. This allows the medication to produce pain relief and pleasure, but to a much weaker effect. Suboxone also blocks the effects of other opioids, making it difficult to get high. As a result, Suboxone helps reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

How Often Is Suboxone Administered?

Suboxone is typically taken as a tablet or film that dissolves under the tongue. It begins to work within minutes and the effects can last for up to 24 hours. The medication is usually taken once a day but can be tapered down as directed by a physician.

Adverse Reactions & Possible Side Effects of Suboxone

Like all medications, Suboxone can cause side effects. The most common side effects include:
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Sweating
  • Dizziness
Less common side effects include:
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Depression

Is Suboxone Effective?

Suboxone is generally considered to be effective in treating opioid addiction. However, some people may experience side effects such as nausea, headaches, and dizziness. Despite these adverse effects, Suboxone has been proven to be an effective treatment for opioid addiction, and it can help people safely detox from opioids and rebuild their lives.

Suboxone is an effective medication for treating opioid addiction, but it is not a cure. Individuals taking Suboxone should also participate in an addiction treatment program.
