Who is Affected by Alcoholism?

Every year, 6,500 people aged 21 and under die from alcohol-related accidents, some of whom were not even drinking themselves. Statistics also show us that alcohol use by people who do not know how to drink responsibly or are unaware of the risks contributes to higher rates of violence, sexual assault, and suicide. In short, alcoholism or alcohol abuse affects everyone. That is the importance of alcoholism awareness in Alcohol Awareness Month.

What and When is Alcohol Awareness Month?

Alcohol Awareness Month was founded and sponsored by the National Council of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD). In 1987 the month of April was established as Alcohol Awareness Month with the hope of reducing the stigma that is associated with alcoholism. Alcoholism awareness is key to fighting alcohol abuse. The month of April is dedicated to focusing on alcohol awareness and to most important, to focus on the prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery of alcohol-related problems and issues.
