Meth Detox From Bridges of Hope

methamphetamine

According to one recent study, approximately 1.2 million people in the United States reported using methamphetamine in 2011 – a number that has only skyrocketed in the years since. To put that into perspective, it’s equivalent to about 0.4% of the total population of this country.

Meth addiction is an incredibly serious problem that must be addressed at all costs, which is why at Bridges of Hope Treatment Center we aim to offer the robust, patient-centric, and specific care that you need when you need it the most.

Meth Withdrawal Symptoms

When individuals suddenly stop using methamphetamine after consistently using the drug for an extended amount of time, the brain struggles to adjust, which often has a negative effect on individuals’ physical bodies as well as their emotional and psychological well-being. These negative effects are often referred to as symptoms of withdrawal. These withdrawal symptoms, which can vary from person to person, can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

Oftentimes, the physical symptoms of meth withdrawal include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Headaches
  • Muscle spasms
  • Malnourishment
  • Restlessness
  • Fever and chills
  • Loss of appetite
  • Low energy levels
  • Intense cravings for more methamphetamine
  • Feeling extremely tired
  • Disrupted sleep patterns

Methamphetamine withdrawal can also cause emotional symptoms that can last for weeks or months. These symptoms can include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Paranoia
  • Not feeling motivated

Some of the most frightening methamphetamine withdrawal symptoms have to do with an individual’s psychological well-being. These symptoms are often referred to as “meth psychosis.”

Meth-Induced Psychosis

When individuals experience meth-induced psychosis, they tend to suffer from delusions, paranoia, and sometimes violent behavior. When this happens, individuals may have a hard time differentiating between what’s real and what’s not.

Meth psychosis is characterized by 3 different types of psychological symptoms:

  • Hallucinations. Individuals experiencing this symptom tend to see, feel, or hear things that don’t exist. Examples include feeling bugs crawling on their skin, seeing walls move, or hearing voices when no one else is around.
  • Delusions. Most individuals experiencing meth-induced delusions have unusual and unrealistic thoughts. Many individuals detoxing from methamphetamine have the feeling that someone is spying on them.
  • Paranoia. This symptom usually makes individuals feel suspicious of the people around them.

Unlike the physical symptoms associated with methamphetamine withdrawal, meth psychosis can last long after individuals have completed the detoxification process. Meth psychosis can also be triggered by periods of extreme stress.

Even though most methamphetamine withdrawal symptoms are not deadly, meth psychosis can be extremely dangerous. That’s why methamphetamine detox should only be performed under medical supervision.
